Cooling towels for outdoor work

How cooling towels fit into a working day outdoors, where they help, where they are not enough, and what to know about wearing one safely around machinery and PPE.

Working outdoors in heat is a different problem from exercising in it. You cannot choose your hours, you often cannot choose your clothing, and the exposure lasts a full shift rather than an hour. PPE that is essential for one hazard frequently makes the heat worse.

A cooling towel is a genuinely useful bit of personal kit in that context. It is also not heat safety equipment, and the distinction matters enough to state up front.

What a cooling towel does and does not do

It does: keep you more comfortable across a long shift, for very little money, without needing power, ice or a freezer. It can be brought back to life at any tap, which matters on a site where a cool box is not practical. It packs into a pocket and weighs almost nothing.

It does not: protect against heat illness. Feeling cooler is not the same as being cooler in any medically meaningful sense, and comfort can mask how hard your body is actually working. It does nothing about fluid loss.

Managing heat at work means water, shade, rest breaks, scheduling the hardest tasks outside peak heat, acclimatisation for new workers, and knowing the signs of heat exhaustion. Those are the controls. A towel makes the day more bearable within them.

If heat is a real hazard on your site, that is a risk assessment matter, and your employer’s heat policy overrides anything on this page.

Safety around machinery and PPE

This section matters more than the comfort advice.

Snagging. A towel draped loosely around the neck is exactly the sort of thing that gets caught in rotating parts, drive shafts, conveyors, augers and power tools. Anywhere a loose scarf or a lanyard would be unacceptable, a loose towel is unacceptable too. Options: tuck it fully inside a collar, wrap it round a wrist instead, or take it off entirely for those tasks.

PPE fit. Never route a towel anywhere that changes how PPE sits. It must not lift a hard hat, sit under the seal of a respirator, interfere with eye protection, or come between a harness and your body. If it affects the fit, it comes off.

Visibility. Do not cover high-vis material with a towel. If you need cooling and visibility, keep the towel below the collar line and outside the vest, or choose a placement that leaves the vest fully exposed.

Electrical work. A damp towel is a conductor. Keep it away from live work entirely.

Getting the most out of it during a shift

Activate at the start, before you are hot. Wet it, wring it firmly until damp rather than dripping, shake it out. Recovering from overheating takes considerably longer than staying ahead of it.

Wear it on the neck when the task allows. That is where cooling has the largest effect relative to area, because blood vessels run close to the surface there.

Re-wet at breaks. Up to about 3 hours per activation means roughly one re-wet at morning break and one after lunch covers a standard day. Any water works and it does not need to be cold. About half a cup, worked through by hand, revives most of the towel.

Keep it in air, not in a bag. Sealed in a pocket it stops evaporating and stops cooling. Hang it where air can reach it when you are not wearing it.

Take it off in enclosed heat with no airflow. In a sealed plant room or a confined space with still, saturated air, evaporation nearly stops and a damp towel round your neck adds very little. Those environments need engineering controls, not a towel.

Why the material matters on site

Work kit gets washed constantly and thrown away regularly. Most cooling towels are polyester or a PVA blend, which sheds microplastics in every wash and persists for a very long time once binned.

Ours uses a biodegradable performance fibre blend and is built for 100 or more wash cycles, which addresses both halves of that: it lasts long enough to be economical as issued kit, and it breaks down naturally rather than fragmenting when it is finally retired.

For anyone buying kit at scale rather than individually, that combination is usually the deciding factor.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear a cooling towel under a hard hat or high-vis?
A cooling towel works best in contact with skin and with air able to reach it, so under a high-vis vest it does very little. Around the back of the neck, below the hat line and outside the collar, is the usual placement. Never route a towel anywhere it interferes with the fit of PPE, and follow your site rules over any general advice here.
Is a cooling towel enough for working in serious heat?
No, and it should not be treated as heat safety equipment. It is a comfort tool. Managing occupational heat means water, shade, rest breaks, adjusted schedules and recognising heat illness early. A towel sits alongside those, never in place of them. If heat is a genuine hazard on your site, that is a risk assessment question, not a kit question.
How do you re-wet a cooling towel on site?
Any water source works and it does not need to be cold. A site tap, a welfare unit sink, a water bowser or a drinking bottle will all do it. A small amount is enough: about half a cup worked through by hand revives most of the towel.
Are cooling towels safe around machinery?
A loose towel around the neck is a snagging hazard near anything with rotating parts, drive shafts, conveyors or power tools. Do not wear one loose in those areas. Tuck it fully, switch to a wrist wrap, or take it off. Treat it exactly as you would treat a loose scarf or lanyard.
