There are four common ways to cool a person down without cooling the room they are in: a cooling towel, an ice pack, a cooling vest, or disposable cooling wipes. They are often discussed as if one is simply best, which is not true. They fail and succeed in different places.

Ice packs
What they are good at: raw cooling power. An ice pack is dramatically colder than anything else here, and if you need to bring someone’s temperature down quickly, it is the right tool.
Where they fall down: duration and logistics. A typical gel pack gives you 20 to 45 minutes, after which you are carrying a warm bag of liquid. You cannot recharge it without a freezer, so on a long day you either need multiple packs and a cool box, or you need to accept that your cooling ends mid-afternoon. They are also heavy and rigid, and they sweat condensation into whatever bag they are in.
Use one when: you need intense cooling for a short, known period and you have freezer access, or for injury management where cold therapy is the actual goal.
One caution: ice against bare skin can cause cold injury. Ice packs should have a barrier between them and the skin, which is a constraint a cooling towel does not have.
Cooling vests
What they are good at: sustained, hands-free cooling across a large area. For someone working a full shift in a foundry or a warehouse in summer, a proper cooling vest is a serious piece of safety equipment and worth the money.
Where they fall down: cost, bulk and preparation. Most need pre-chilling in a freezer or a soak-and-wring routine of their own, they are visible and bulky under or over clothing, and the good ones cost many times what a towel does. Phase-change vests need their inserts recharged, which brings back the freezer problem.
Use one when: heat exposure is a sustained occupational reality rather than an occasional discomfort, and you need both hands and full mobility.
Disposable cooling wipes
What they are good at: being in a pocket when you did not plan ahead. They are light, sealed and need no preparation.
Where they fall down: essentially everything else. The cooling is brief and mild, largely from evaporating alcohol or menthol rather than sustained evaporative cooling, and every use produces waste. Over a season the cost adds up to many times a reusable towel while delivering less.
Use one when: it is the only thing available.
Cooling towels
What they are good at: duration, portability and independence from infrastructure. Up to 3 hours per activation, and then you re-wet it and get another 3. Any water source works, and it does not need to be cold. It packs down to nothing, weighs almost nothing, and costs very little per use across a 100-wash lifespan.
The neck placement matters more than it sounds. Blood vessels run close to the surface there, so cooling that specific area affects overall comfort out of proportion to the area covered.
Where they fall down: two places, honestly.
The first is peak intensity. A cooling towel will never feel like an ice pack. It makes you comfortable rather than cold, and if what you want is a shock of cold, it is not that.
The second is high humidity. Evaporative cooling depends on the surrounding air being able to absorb water vapour. In very humid conditions the air is already close to saturated, evaporation slows, and the effect gets noticeably weaker. It still helps, because damp fabric against skin conducts heat away regardless, but the difference between a cooling towel in dry heat and the same towel in tropical humidity is real and worth knowing before you buy.
Use one when: you need to stay comfortable for hours rather than minutes, you will not have freezer access, and you need to carry it easily.
How to choose
Ask what actually constrains you.
- No freezer, long day, need it portable? Cooling towel.
- Short intense cool-down, freezer available? Ice pack.
- Full shift in occupational heat, hands-free, budget available? Cooling vest.
- Nothing planned, need something now? Wipes, then buy a towel.
- Very humid climate? A cooling towel still helps but expect a gentler effect; if the heat is a safety issue rather than a comfort one, look at vests.
For most people, most of the time, the deciding factor is not how cold something gets. It is whether it is still working three hours in, and whether it was small enough that you actually brought it.
